The Best Time to Help a Family Is Before They Reach Crisis

By Sondra Ajasin

One of the biggest misconceptions about Child Protective Services (CPS) is that they exist to fix families.

They don't.

CPS exists to protect children when concerns have reached a level where the safety of a child is in question.

By the time CPS becomes involved, a family is often already in crisis. Emotions are high. Relationships are strained. Trust has been broken. Children are scared. Parents feel overwhelmed, judged, and sometimes hopeless.

I've spent years working alongside children and families, and one thing has become very clear to me:

The best time to help a family is long before CPS ever has to knock on the door.

Families Don't Wake Up Wanting to Fail

Most parents don't wake up one morning and decide to neglect their children.

More often than not, they are carrying burdens that have become too heavy to carry alone.

Sometimes it's financial stress.

Sometimes it's untreated trauma.

Sometimes it's addiction, mental health struggles, domestic violence, isolation, or simply never having had someone teach them what healthy parenting looks like.

Many of the parents we meet today were once children who experienced trauma themselves.

That doesn't excuse harmful behavior, but it does help us understand it.

And understanding is often where healing begins.

Every Family Has a Story

One thing I've learned over the years is that if you slow down long enough to listen, every family has a story.

Behind every struggling parent is often someone who never had healthy relationships modeled for them.

Behind every child acting out is usually a child trying to communicate pain they don't yet have words for.

When we only respond after a crisis, we spend our energy putting out fires.

When we intervene early, we have the opportunity to prevent them.

Prevention Is One of the Greatest Forms of Child Protection

Imagine if families had someone to call before they reached their breaking point.

Someone who could connect them with resources.

  • Teach parenting skills.

  • Help them create routines.

  • Find counseling.

  • Navigate school challenges.

  • Locate food, housing, or employment assistance.

Sometimes families don't need someone to rescue them.

They simply need someone to walk beside them.

That's why I believe so deeply in family preservation whenever it is safe and appropriate.

Children deserve safe homes, but they also deserve every reasonable opportunity to remain connected to healthy families whenever possible.

This Is Why We Are Building Project REACH

This Is Why We Are Building Project REACH

At TruLight127 Ministries, we are intentionally expanding beyond responding to crisis.

Through Project REACH, our vision is to meet families where they are before situations become emergencies.

That means offering practical support, parent coaching, education, encouragement, and connections to community resources.

It means helping families build healthy foundations instead of waiting until those foundations begin to crumble.

Because when we strengthen parents, we strengthen children.

When we strengthen families, we strengthen entire communities.

Transformation Is About More Than Crisis Intervention

One of the words we use often at TruLight is transformation.

Transformation isn't simply getting through today.

  • It's building a better tomorrow.

  • It's teaching life skills.

  • It's helping youth discover who they were created to become.

  • It's equipping parents with confidence instead of shame.

  • It's helping families replace survival with stability and stability with growth.

Real transformation happens one relationship, one conversation, and one act of hope at a time.

We All Have a Role

You don't have to be a social worker to change the life of a child.

  • You can mentor.

  • Volunteer.

  • Support a struggling parent.

  • Become a foster or adoptive family.

  • Partner with organizations serving children.

  • Pray.

  • Give.

  • Encourage.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer someone is simply letting them know they are not alone.

Looking Forward

I believe the future of child welfare has to include more than responding to crisis.

  • It has to include prevention.

  • It has to include healing.

  • It has to include restoration.

At TruLight127 Ministries, that's the future we're working toward every day.

Because every child deserves more than safety.

Every child deserves hope.

Every family deserves the opportunity to grow stronger.

And sometimes, the most life-changing intervention is the one that happens before anyone ever has to make a call to CPS.

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." — Galatians 6:2

If you or someone you know is struggling and needs support, don't wait until a crisis occurs. Reach out. There is strength in asking for help, and there are people who want to walk alongside you.
