When God Calls You to Say "Yes" Before You Know the Story

There is something both beautiful and terrifying about an emergency foster care placement.

The phone rings.

A child needs a home.

The details are limited.

You don't know their history. You don't know what they have experienced. You don't know how long they will stay or what tomorrow will bring.

All you know is that a child needs someone to say, "Yes."

For many families, that's exactly where fear steps in.

"What if we're not ready?"

"What if we don't know what to do?"

"What if it's harder than we imagined?"

Those are honest questions. The truth is, emergency placements are hard. They often come with uncertainty, grief, trauma, and emotions that no child should ever have to carry.

But they also come with incredible opportunity.

Every Child Is Worth the Unknown

Behind every emergency placement is not a case number.

It's a little girl who just watched her entire world change.

It's a teenage boy wondering if anyone will ever choose him.

It's siblings praying they won't be separated.

It's children carrying trash bags instead of suitcases because life changed faster than anyone could prepare them.

When we remember that, the unknown begins to look different.

Instead of asking, "What if this is too hard?"

We begin asking,

"What if this child experiences God's love because we said yes?"

God Rarely Gives Us the Whole Picture

Throughout Scripture, God consistently called ordinary people to take extraordinary steps before they knew the outcome.

Noah built before the rain came.

Abraham left without knowing where he was going.

Peter stepped out of the boat before he knew what walking on water felt like.

Mary accepted God's plan without knowing every chapter that would follow.

Faith has never been about having every answer.

Faith has always been about trusting the One who does.

When God calls families into foster care, He doesn't promise that every placement will be easy. He doesn't promise there won't be tears, sleepless nights, difficult behaviors, or heartbreaking goodbyes.

He promises that He will be with us.

You Don't Have to Be Perfect

One of the biggest misconceptions about emergency foster care is that families need to have everything figured out before saying yes.

The reality?

Children don't need perfect families.

They need safe families.

They need patient families.

They need adults willing to learn, ask questions, accept support, and love them one day at a time.

Sometimes the greatest gift you can offer isn't having all the answers.

It's simply opening your door.

A Safe Place Can Change Everything

Many children entering foster care have spent days, months, or even years living in survival mode.

A warm meal.

A clean bed.

A hug.

A calm voice.

A predictable bedtime.

These simple acts of love can begin to restore a child's sense of safety.

Healing rarely happens overnight, but every moment of consistency plants seeds of hope.

You may never fully know the impact your home has on a child. What feels ordinary to you may become a memory they carry for the rest of their lives.

It's Not About Saving Children

Foster parents are not superheroes.

We cannot erase trauma.

We cannot fix every hurt.

We cannot change every circumstance.

But we can stand in the gap.

We can love well.

We can provide safety while families work toward healing, reunification, or another permanent plan.

Most importantly, we can reflect the heart of Christ.

Jesus never waited for people to have their lives together before He loved them. He met them exactly where they were.

Foster care gives us the opportunity to do the same.

Your "Yes" Matters

Not every family is called to foster.

But for those whom God is stirring, don't let fear have the final word.

The unknown will always be there.

The hard days will come.

But so will the moments that remind you exactly why you answered the call—a child's first genuine smile, laughter echoing through your home, trust beginning to replace fear, or hearing "thank you" from a child who finally feels safe.

Those moments are worth it.

Every child is worth it.

If God is calling you to step out in faith, remember this:

He doesn't call the equipped.

He equips the called.

Maybe today, your simple "yes" could become the beginning of a new chapter in a child's life.

And perhaps, God will use that same "yes" to transform yours as well.

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress..." — James 1:27
